So you have booked a two week holiday to Barbados and while there is so much to do here why not consider a side trip to one of the other Caribbean destinations?  On the top of our list is Grenada and on the top of the list of places to stay would be Calabash Hotel on Lance Aux Epines beach.  We just spent 3 nights in this gem of a hotel basking in the low-keyed atmosphere yet surrounded by touches of luxury throughout.

Getting to Grenada is quite easy from Barbados, and there are other options from the US, Canada and the UK for direct flights.  We booked with LIAT and the flight left Barbados just after 12.30 p.m. and we were there in less than 40 minutes, straight though Immigration and Customs and on exiting there was our friendly driver waiting for us to whisk us to Calabash.  There we were met at the entrance by Leo and his efficient team with cold towels and big smiles.  Checking in was quick and easy and we were soon escorted to our room 'Morning Glory'.  Wow, what a room!  We were in a Pool Suite which had a fabulous view across the gardens and to the ocean and that was just the start.  A comfortable patio leads into the spacious seating area with TV and mini-bar and then our bedroom and huge bathroom with a fabulous rain massage shower, bathrobes, slippers and Elemis products - a perfect mini spa!  From our bedroom we had a private pool, outdoor shower and outdoor tub - pure heaven!

We were briefed about the restaurants and then were given an invitation to the Managers Cocktail Hour at 6.30 p.m.  Before heading to the Beach Club for a late lunch we had some rum punch and home-made cookies while unpacking and getting ourselves sorted.  The Beach Club menu is varied and with healthy options - the recommended drink of the day was a Passion Fruit Mojito which was delicious!  A walk on the beach, a swim in the sea and then back to get ready for the evening.  The cocktail hour was great - Leo and family were there to welcome everyone and it was lovely chatting to fellow guests and staff.  Dinner was in Rhodes restaurant where the food and service are excellent.  The following couple of days were spent soaking up the sun, swimming, walking along the beach and just chilling out.

The property offers a boutique with trendy wear and accessories, full spa, tennis courts, fitness room, large fresh water swimming pool, non-motorised water sports, room service including cocktails and canapes at 6 p.m., and the best feature is breakfast served daily on your patio or balcony!  The homemade yoghurt is the best!  In fact, at Calabash they try and make everything they can from scratch and it shows in the quality of the food and the menu.  For those that need to be connected complimentary WiFi is provided.  Have to admit that I had to do a bit of work every day so having the WiFi was useful.

The place was perfect for unwinding, relaxing and just enjoying the peace and quiet in a beautiful bay, with friendly and efficient staff and a high standard of cuisine.  If you are travelling with a large crowd then you might wish to consider the stand alone villas on the estate.  Two, three and five bedroom villas with stunning views and all with their own private pool and housekeeping.  Barbados Villa Services is now offering a 10% discount on the rack rates for Calabash when you book your stay with one of our properties in Barbados this summer.  Go on, give Grenada a try, you won't be disappointed.
