Decided to surprise my youngest daughter with dinner at  Nishi Restaurant to celebrate her 15th birthday on 01 October 2014.  Luckily Nishi was reopening that night after several weeks of renovations and refurbishments so we were really looking forward to this evening to see all the changes.  We have been several time since it was bought over earlier this year by Chef Paul Edwards and Stephen Prebble

As it was my daughter’s birthday I wanted to bring some decorations for the table and to leave her card and gift, so I called ahead and was told I could come by anytime to bring the items.  I headed there around 3 p.m. and found the place nowhere near ready – I was expecting the place to be all put together and the tables upstairs all laid out etc., – nada, zip, nothing!  Staff were busy cleaning floors and washing down the outside deck, painters and workmen were still working on the refurb areas, the courtyard furniture was all stacked up in corners and upstairs, tables were in place but not laid out.  Paul assured me that all would be ready, the chefs were in the kitchen prepping and the wine was chilled.  Our reservation was for 7 p.m. but I said we would be there for around 6.30 p.m.  Big friendly wave from Paul and I left there thinking, oh goodness, please oh please let it be ready, all the while inside I was saying, there is no way!

My sister and her husband arrived there around 6.30 p.m. and we were there around 6.50 p.m. and everything, I mean everything, was in its place as if it had always been there!  The downstairs courtyard was laid out, tables set, big bright throw cushions on the sofas, bar stools neatly placed and he bar staff were ready to go!  Drinks were ordered and served and we sat down in the seating area under the canopy and enjoyed our nibbles and drinks and then headed upstairs after about ½ an hour.

With just the faintest smell of paint we were led upstairs to our table – and there it was beautifully laid out and decorated and her balloon and gifts were all there waiting.  The rest of the tables were all laid beautifully.  It was just amazing to see the transformation given the  3 hour lead time.

Dinner was as expected – totally delicious!  Starters were edamame and some dim sum followed by sushi selections which included the most delicious Volcano dish ever!  My salmon was perfect!  Dessert was ordered and my daughter’s dessert came out with a sparkling fire candle and the staff presented it to her singing Happy Birthday!

It was everything that we hoped for and we were not disappointed.  Paul, as always a very friendly and charming host, came round several times to make sure that everything was OK, the waitresses and waiters were all friendly, chatty and smiling.  This is the perfect place to enjoy a quiet dinner for two or to celebrate a special occasion au deux or with a group of friends or family.  There is a choice of inside (air-conditioned) with the new addition of the glass enclosed balcony or al fresco downstairs in the courtyard which is covered so no worries if there is a bit of rain.  The menu is varied and besides the usual sushi, sashimi and Asian specialties there is traditional English fare like steak and kidney pie and American steak and fries (or chips as the English would say)!  Something for everyone.
